Fall Foliage by Boat: Portland & Beyond
From the islands of Casco Bay to rocky coastal parks and forested trails just outside the city, there are plenty of ways to experience autumn around Portland.
See the Colors of Casco Bay
Fore Points Marina is located on Casco Bay, which is home to beautiful wooded islands and the Portland shoreline providing a colorful backdrop.
The rocky Maine coastline and blue water provides a stunning contrast to the changing leaves with red and gold hues.
As we move through October and activity on the water begins to slow down, it is a calm and tranquil cruise, especially in the crisp morning hours.
The sun sets earlier in the evenings, with “golden hour” casting a warm sparkle over the bay.
Hike Mackworth Island
A bit north of Portland, Mackworth Island State Park is home to a one-and-a-quarter mile trail along the perimeter to provide hikers with an ocean view between the fall foliage.
Be on the lookout for seagulls, osprey, and other shorebirds as you walk the perimeter of the island.
Picturesque Fort Williams Park
Spanning over 90 acres, Fort Williams Park is situated on Cape Elizabeth and is home to the famous Portland Head Light.
The rocky coast and colorful trees frame the lighthouse in a way that demands to be admired. Snap a photo and take a walk through the trails that line the shore.
Casco Bay is home to a number of islands that offer walking trails and natural beauty. Head to Peaks Island for several public beaches, an ice cream, and walking and biking trails to explore and take in the fall foliage.
Peaks Island is home to 1000 year-round residents and is accessible by ferry. The full island loop amounts to 3.7 miles and offers great views, including that of the rocky Cairn Beach.
